Job Title: Kindergarten Teacher/Forest School Guide
Employment type: Part-time, 3 days per week
Regular hours: Tues/Thurs/Fri 8:30-3:30; approx 21 hours/week + paid planning time
Location: Nature's Schoolhouse, Cedar Park and Twin Lakes Park/Brushy Creek Trail (Nature's Schoolhouse satellite location)
Our playful, immersive outdoor program is a wonderful way for children to make lasting connections with the natural world as an extension to their home school studies. Essential social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills grow as does a genuine love for nature. We cultivate gratitude, empathy, and appreciation of our diverse community in our part-time enrichment program.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, this position will serve as our Lead Kindergarten Teacher, and will lead a small group of seven 4-6 year olds through instruction of basic skills across the span of the school year. Must be willing to facilitate some lessons outdoors, in all types of weather, using natural materials for learning. These lessons will take place at our main schoolhouse, in Cedar Park.
We spend every Friday at Twin Lakes Park and Brushy Creek Trail. On Fridays, this position will serve as a Nature Guide to our Kinder class. Duties will include collaborating with our other teachers to plan and facilitate weekly Forest School lessons (utilizing the Families in Nature curriculum) as well as helping to manage our parent volunteers and making sure we are adhering to our daily schedule.
The ideal candidate will be willing to work closely with children to facilitate indoor and outdoor classes. Tasks include thoughtful curriculum design based on children’s emergent interests, ongoing reflection and assessment of children and the program, and collaboration with administrator, other teachers, and volunteers. Lead teachers set the tone for learning as engaged, enthusiastic role models of nature-based education while maintaining a safe, positive atmosphere.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Responsible for planning and facilitating immersive outdoor experiences for young children. This includes maintaining a safe, loving environment with safety routines that protect yet empower children.
Nurture individualized needs of children while managing whole group experiences and unstructured outdoor play.
Create lesson plans based on children’s and seasonal interests.
Participate in various community-building initiatives with staff and local partners.
Manage materials and equipment; request/order new materials as needed.
Other duties that support families, children, and staff will also be assigned as needed.
**Classes are regularly held outdoors, so you must be willing and eager to facilitate outdoor learning in all seasons!**
Essential Experience & Education:
Possess or in pursuit of a degree in elementary education, nature-based education, or other closely related field preferred, but not required.
Possess current First Aid and CPR credentials (certification required no later than 30 days after hire date)
Must pass background check before starting employment
Experience working with elementary aged children
Physically able to hike, carry gear, and carry a small child if needed (up to 75 lbs)
Collaborative duties with fellow staff:
Provide positive guidance to children in navigating their social interactions with peers and adults.
Maintain friendly yet professional interpersonal communication skills with children, families, fellow staff and volunteers.
Participate in staff meetings and any ongoing team-building and/or professional development activities.
Participate in community events (IE. Open Houses, Community Days, School Tours) for prospective and current families.
This is a part-time position with a starting pay rate of $19/hr. If space is available, your child may accompany you to our program at a 50% discount (one scholarship max). You will also be eligible to participate in our benefits package, which includes employer sponsored health and dental insurance, Paid Time Off, and yearly bonuses.
This is currently a part-time (3 eight hour days/wk) position, with the potential to grow into a full-time, salary position.
